All About Your DMEs

All About Your DMEs

An average person like you would see a wheelchair and think about its purpose: how it transports a patient from one place to another and how it aids a patient in getting around. But did you know that there are many others like it? They are called DMEs.

DMEs, or durable medical equipment, are equipment that provide therapeutic aid and benefits to a patient who would need it due to certain medical conditions and illnesses. Most insurance companies provide coverage for durable medical equipment when it is medically necessary.

When is a DME a DME?

Your durable medical equipment does exactly what it intends to: make your or your patient’s life easier. But how exactly would we know what classifies as a durable medical equipment?

These items are primarily and normally used to serve a medical purpose. They are useless to a person with the absence of illness, injury, or instability, are prescribed and ordered by a physician, are reusable, can be used repeatedly (durable), and are appropriate for home use. A durable medical equipment is a DME when it satisfies these conditions.

What durable medical equipment can be covered by insurance?

There are plenty of health insurance providers across the United States. Most of them will cover most of the equipment listed below.

Here is a list of DMEs that can be covered by insurance (specifically Medicare):

  • Air-fluidized beds and other support surfaces
  • Blood sugar monitors
  • Glucose test strips
  • Canes
  • Commode chairs
  • Continuous passive motion (CPM) machine
  • Crutches
  • Hospital beds
  • Infusion pumps and supplies
  • Manual wheelchairs and power mobility devices
  • Nebulizers and nebulizer medications
  • Oxygen equipment and accessories
  • Patient lifts
  • Sleep apnea and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices and accessories
  • Suction pumps
  • Traction equipment
  • Walkers

When can a DME be covered by insurance?

Your durable medical equipment must provide therapeutic benefit to your patient whose need is caused by a medical condition or illness. It must also be licensed by a healthcare provider. It is not meant as a mere instrument for comfort or convenience, and it must not be used for non-medical reasons.

Why are durable medical equipment important?

DMEs are vital and valuable in their own ways. With the rapid technological advancement, the need for a non-human aid for the evolving human illnesses also advances. Furthermore, medication continues to improve and it brings along with it the improvement of the administration methods of these medications. Durable medical equipment help aid patients in continuing their daily lives and thereby increasing their quality of life.
